I decided to completely redo my creature because it wasn’t fitting in my IP. I want to do a fantasy creature that looks more stylized a little. I don’t want it to look like a mix of 2 different animals.
The creatures would all have the kind of green glowing patterns like the creature #3.
The castle of the Horned King :
Main character (Taran) :
The Black Cauldron (portal) :

Ok cool. Don't worry about starting again, sometimes it's for the best.
ReplyDeleteFrom the sketches so far, I think the head size of #2 works best. The others are maybe a bit too large where they're approaching an almost comical feel. I think even if we don't go for the combination of different animals, we can still the research we've done as reference for textures, etc.
Something you might want to think about is how you want to present this creature as the "cauldron born". I think there's something about the face and overall look of the creature that makes it almost feel more like a boss monster. This might be something that you want but I would also consider if you place a few of these creatures next to your eventual Horned King design, are they going to compete with his design and look more like they're in charge?
Maybe something you want to explore of the face is something still very sinister and intimidating, but maybe feeling more "being controlled by something else" or even "mindless". I think this will help so that when we place a bunch of these behind the Horned King in a keyframe for example, he will still look like he's in control and these are his minions.
I think its the larger head, the whiskers and the gem on its head that is giving me the feeling that this creature is really smart or something and it would be commanding a bunch of smaller minions. Also I'm not sure if I can imagine this creature in a group - unless you want to interpret the cauldron born as one single creature (up to you).
Keep exploring, I think overall body idea for #2 works but keep exploring for the head/face
