Nice start on the variations Cara. Don't forget that you can also try to play around with the overall body proportions and see what that gives you. e.g. maybe the first one you could try giving it an extra set of arms. Or the second one you could try a much longer body.
For these current variations, I think we're seeing some interesting stuff so far but I think we can still try some more. When I'm doing variations and trying to judge which one might work, I really try to imagine each design being reveal in the "movie". i.e. the cauldron portal opens and this creature comes out and this is the "reveal" of it. Which design do I think will make the most impact for the feeling I want the viewers to have at that moment.
Some of the ideas you have for the second one could be cool for that. e.g. with #4 we could see the tentacle feet slowly reaching out of the portal first.
#2 and #3 of the bottom one definitely give me 2 different feelings, #2 is more creepy whereas #3 is almost cute.
Keep going, remember doing the designs that don't work are also super valuable to help us get to the final design.
